Elizabeth "Betty" Jane (Schryver) Nelligan

Sumter, SC ... Elizabeth Jane Schryver Nelligan, age 87, beloved wife of nine years to Nelson E. Nelligan, died on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, SC.

Born on December 18, 1936, in Atlantic City, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Gerrit D. Schryver and Ruth Whitty Schryver.  Betty was a very talented, creative, intelligent, diligent, strong, loving, and resilient individual.  Along with her various financial leadership roles, Betty owned both a catering and a bookkeeping business.  She was a proud Alumna and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland.  She, along with her husband Nelson, attended and worshiped at St. Anne and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church as well as EWTN TV.  Betty enjoyed writing, cooking, drawing, painting, and music, however, her true joy in life came from spending time with family.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband Nelson, of Sumter; a son Leon Raymond Young; two daughters, Lorraine Marie Davis and husband Mike, and Andrea Lynne Dowling; she was a wonderful step-mother to four sons, Patrick Nelligan and wife Lisa, David Nelligan and wife Leslie, Mark Nelligan and wife Saymar, and John Nelligan; a sister, Marie Louise Hughes; eleven grandchildren, Royce Albert Burell and wife Lindsay, Shane Patrick Dowling, Robyn Joy Catzva Kilrain and husband Josh, Christina Sustaita and husband Leo, Tiffany Reid, Adrienne Meismer and husband Tommy, Rebecca Hinkle, Kelly Nelligan, Levi Nelligan and wife Amy, Aubrey Nelligan, and Alessa Murphy and husband Austin, six great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Ganz, and two sisters, Mary Collins and Geraldine Leichtnam.

A Rosary service will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 4:30 in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.  A visitation will follow the rosary service from 5:00-7:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. Anne and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church.

Betty will be laid to rest in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
