Sumter, SC…Josephine "Jo" Young Hamby, age 81, beloved wife of the late Philip Lake Hamby, died on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at Prisma Health Tuomey.
Born in Fayette, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late James Dorsey Young and Anna Leigh Chambers Young. Mrs. Hamby was one of the most generous, compassionate, and faithful women that anyone has ever met. The joy she brought to so many lives is inspirational not only by her selfless acts of giving but her genuine care of others. She was a longtime member of St. Anne and St. Jude Catholic Church and was a volunteer for many church events and organizations.
Surviving are: two daughters, Rebecca Ann Hamby of Sumter and Patricia Hamby Black of Anderson; one brother, James Dorsey Young, Jr. and his wife Deanie; two nephews, Scott Young and Jay Young and his wife Sally; one niece, Jann Young all of Birmingham, AL; and her honorary children, Joey Duggan, Billy Duggan, Stephen Duggan, Elaine Booker, Cathy Bish, and Chris Wand.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Young.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:00 am at the St. Anne Catholic Church with the Rev. Giovannie Nunez, CRM officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home with the Wake/Rosary service beginning at 4:30 pm in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.
