Sumter, SC … Toyomi “Rose" Flax, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Prisma Health Tuomey.
Rose was born in Sendai, Japan on June 24, 1929, to Shonoski Shoji and Tomiko Shoji.
She married Martin C. Flax in Tokyo, Japan on January 27, 1953, where they resided until being stationed at Travis AFB, Fairfield, California. They lived in many places in the U.S. throughout their military career, in addition to Japan and Okinawa, until finally retiring at Shaw AFB, in Sumter. Her most recent home was Covenant Place of Sumter.
She was a wonderful, nurturing and supportive mother to her children; grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a dedicated, supportive, adoring and protective wife. She took pride in her family and home. Rose was loved by everyone who met her and left behind a beautiful impression. She was a very gracious, giving and appreciative happy soul. A truer friend could not be found, and she will surely be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Martin C. Flax, three children; Ronald David Flax of Sumter, Diana Susan Flax Hodge of Gaston and Dennis Flax of Columbia; three grandchildren; Wesley Hodge and his wife Melanie, Shawna Hodge Amick and her husband Allen and Daniel Hodge all of Columbia; two great grandchildren; Ashleigh Amick and Braeden Amick, both of Columbia; one sister-in-law; Davida Seatter and her husband Donald of The Villages, FL and one brother-in-law; Herbert Flax and his wife Patricia of St. Augustine, FL.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank special friends and caregivers who had made Rose’s life a better one with their support. Kikue “Chris" Hudson and Mieko Moseley, who were “life sisters” to her; very special friends, Kenneth Signor, Salvatore Di Cola, the Deaton family, Carolina Caregivers, Comfort Keepers, Dr. Michael Naylor and the staff and many friends at Covenant Place. And a very special thank you to the wonderful staff of Prisma Health Tuomey and Tuomey Hospice.
