Earl Berry Jr. Obituary

Sumter, SC…Earl Pink Berry, Jr, age 79, precious, beloved husband and father, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at MUSC in Charleston, South Carolina.

Born in Sumter, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Earl Pink Berry Sr and Elizabeth Eddins Berry. Earl served in the Army Reserves from 1963 to 1969. Beginning October 1965, he served as an officer with the City of Sumter Police Department until he retired as Captain in December 1990. After retiring, he remained on with Sumter PD as a Polygraph Operator and later with Animal Control. Earl later became a State Constable assigned to Camden PD, helping out with a variety of duties from stolen property to Firearms Training. Earl shot in competitions as a member of the SC Law Enforcement Officers’ Association, winning “top gun” award for firing two perfect scores and one near perfect in a three relay SCLEOA event. He has received many awards and maintained his expertise in marksmanship since 1967 up to his passing. He was a member of the SC Police Combat League and was always in the Governor’s Twenty top shooters. Outside of being a Public Servant, he was active in being a Referee for Parks & Recreation, Little League and Adult Softball. He never slowed down. Earl was a man of unparalleled integrity and always one to keep you on your toes with his vast knowledge of trivia, riddles, and jokes. There are no words to describe how much he will be missed by his family and friends. Earl has entered Heaven’s Gates and now celebrates life eternal with the Lord Jesus Christ. We shall see you again one day!

Earl is survived by his wife of 32 years, Dianne L Kelly Berry, their daughter Brianna Lyn Berry of Charleston, SC, one daughter by a previous marriage, Shawn Berry Clark (Kenny) of Charleston, SC, and one son, Kevin Earl Berry of O’Fallon, IL; five grandchildren, Harrison Berry, Emily Berry, Katie Berry, Peyton Love, and Dana Kippel.; and his beloved sister, Peggy Berry Mathis of Columbia, SC, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
