Sumter, SC …. James “Jim” P. Farrar, 93, died the morning of Friday, September 16, 2022, at Prisma Health Tuomey. Born in Huntingburg, Indiana 1929, he was the son of Ona and Edward Farrar. In 1947, after high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He saw wartime service during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, received numerous awards and decorations, and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant after 23 years. He was the owner of Jim’s Exxon and Towing Service, serving the Sumter community for 37 years.
Survivors include his wife Jane of 13 years; two children, James C. Farrar (Bonnie), and Diane Farrar-Sanderson (Dale), both of Sumter; five grandchildren, Lauri Peyton (Crys) of Sumter, Ammie Bryant (Jason) of Pensacola, FL, James D. Farrar of Sumter, Tim Pace (Robyn) of Columbia, SC, and Chris Pace (Lexi) of Billings, MT; nine great-grandchildren, EmmaLee, Cody, Jadon, Kayden, Jewel, Skylar, Cayson, Rylan, and Serenity; three step-children Al Odom (Sharon) of Chapin, Barry Odom (Sue) of Chapin, and Rolanda Best of LaGrange, NC also eleven step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Jim, a loyal USC Gamecock fan, was predeceased by his wife Betty Farrar of 57 years. He was, as a young man, taught the principle of loving God, Country, Family, and Others.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 22 at 11:00 am at Alice Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Clay W. Smith officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
