Sumter, SC … James David Prater, age 71, beloved husband of 32 years to Rebecca Godinez Prater, passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at NHC Lexington.
Born in Moulton, AL, he was the son of the late James Russell Prater and the late Hazel Hill Prater. James was a man of strong Christian faith. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and attended Gateway Baptist Church. He served his country proudly as a member of the US Air Force and retired as a MSGT after over 24 years of service. He then went to work for Caterpillar of Sumter where he worked for an additional 18 years before retiring. For the past five years, he has worked at the Walmart gas station on Pinewood Road in Sumter. James was an avid Alabama football fan and enjoyed most all other sports especially soccer. He enjoyed supporting his children in their sporting and other activities. He also enjoyed watching cowboy movies and most recently the television show, Yellowstone. In his own words, “It’s time to call the dogs in.”
In addition to his wife Rebecca are; three sons, Christopher Michael Prater, Jason Lee Prater and Samuel Alec Prater, all of Sumter; one daughter, Sarah Lyn Winter and her husband Tobias of Stuttgart, Germany; two brothers, Don Prater and his wife Geanie of Trinity, AL and Benny Prater and his wife Tammy of Decatur, AL; three sisters, Betty Taylor and her husband Fred of VA, Shelby Orlando and her husband Dominick of TX and Barbara Hallmark of Moulton, AL; Eight grandchildren, Montana, Ashley, Jason Jr., Hunter, Kristen, Christopher Jr., Luke and Hannah and one great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Wayne Prater.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at 3:00 pm in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held on Monday, March 28, 2022, at 1:00 pm in the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors.
A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Sunday, March 27, 2022, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
