Sumter, SC…John Calder Mikell Jr., age 74, beloved husband of Sarah Dunlap Mikell, died on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Prisma Health Tuomey.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late John Calder Mikell Sr. and Corrie Napier Mikell. A retired farmer, Johnny graduated from N.C. State Agricultural College and Francis Marion University. He served in the US Army and received both a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service in the Vietnam war. He enjoyed a long career as a farmer in the Stateburg community and as a volunteer at The Shriners Hospital in Greenville. Johnny was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross where he served for many years on the vestry and cemetery committee. He will be remembered as a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving in Addition to his wife, Sarah, is a son, J. Gordon Mikell and his wife Hannah of Stateburg; a daughter, Frances Mikell Fischer and her husband Matt of Powdersville, SC; a sister, Betty Mikell Harvey and her husband Greg of Leesville, SC and five grandchildren, Adeline, Charlie, Maddox, Watts and Hannah Kate.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 26, 2019, at 1:00 pm at the Church of the Holy Cross with Father Michael E. Ridgill officiating.
A reception will follow the service in the church parish hall.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 25, 2019, from 2:00-4:00 pm at the farm.
