Sumter, SC.… Lt. Colonel John Townsend Stevens, Jr., USAF Retired, beloved husband of 64 years the late Mary Elizabeth Hamer Stevens, died on the morning of Saturday, April 25, 2020 at the age of 92.
Born on March 5, 1928, the son of the late Francena Sue Van Es and John T. Stevens Sr.. He grew up on White Point off of Edisto Island.
He attended Clemson University RTOC program and graduated with a Physics Degree in 1950. He then began a twenty-two year career in the US Air Force, Pentagon and later a twenty-year career at the John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. During his military career, he assisted with the reconstruction efforts following World War II and he served in the Korean War and Vietnam War. In addition, he was involved in many technical, strategical and classified works through the USA and abroad in his careers.
On December 18, 1954, he married Mary Elizabeth Hamer. She passed July 30, 2018 after 64 years of marriage. Together they had five children.
Surviving are: four children, Mary Susan Stevens, Karen Stevens Boykin, Janet Lynne Dufner and her husband Donald, and William James Stevens; one daughter-in-law, Laura Lee Stevens; ten grandchildren, Stephen Christopher Summitt, Susan Michelle Aguado, Sabrina Edwards, Daniel Stevens, Hunter Bokyin, Campbell Boykin, Sara Hanks, Heather Dufner, Danielle Stevens and Annabelle Sanchez and fourteen great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, John T. Stevens, III.
A private family service will be held and a memorial service with full military honors will be held at a later date.
The interment will be held in the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.
