Sumter, SC…Joseph W. DeWitt, age 81, died on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Trident Medical Center in Charleston.
Born in Florence, SC, he was a son of the late James W. DeWitt and Thelma McGee DeWitt. Joseph graduated from the engineering program of Clemson University. He then went to work with The US Corps of Engineers. He worked primarily with public works projects, including the long term plans for supplying drinking water to the Atlanta Metropolitan area. He loved his Clemson Tigers, and enjoyed fishing, and Nascar. His true joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a very loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by; a son, Joseph W. DeWitt (Lynn) of Richmond Hill, GA; a daughter, Elizabeth DeWitt Thompson and her husband Gerald of Panama City Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Catherine DeWitt(Will), Kellie Elizabeth Douglas, Matthew Dewitt, Coleman Vincent Burlingame(Celeste Nicole Wilson), and Mary Jameson Cabrie(Lakota); two great grandchildren, Elaina Jade Cabrie and Coleson Vincent Burlingame and a niece, Renee Gibbons(Keith) of Turbeville and their children, Jennifer Bealey(Tab) and Shana Coker(Stephen).
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Huggins of Lake City.
The family gives special thanks to Leader Cameron, and the staff of Brookdale for the loving care they provided.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at 11:00 am, in the Lake City Memorial Park Cemetery.
