Sumter, SC…Lynn “Tom” Thomason passed away yesterday in Sumter, SC. He was 86 years old.
Born in 1933 to Evelyn and Cecil Thomason in Blount County, Alabama, he was the oldest of five kids. “Tom” or “Chief” as his friends called him proudly served in the Air Force for 32 years. During that time he received numerous awards and accommodations for his service. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. While stationed in Thailand in 1967, he took part in the first Karate exhibition ever staged in Thailand. Prior to the Air Force, he also was in the Navy.
Some of his fondest memories were that as owner and operator of “The Marketplace” located on Hwy 441. Tom often spoke of how he enjoyed interacting with people who came into his shop and how much he looked forward to the arrival of spring flowers and fall pumpkins.
Tom and his wife Juanita had 6 kids, Nita, Norman, Jeff, David, Barbara and John. Tom enjoyed his retirement while living with his partner Kay Fox, and son John and daughter-in law Shannon. He also was a best friend and dad to his dogs Snoopy, Maya, Georgia, and Lady and cats Sandy and Gary. Tom passed away quietly and peacefully in his sleep from natural causes on Sunday.
Services will be held at a later date.
