Mary Shaw Obituary

A graveside service for Mary Macaulay Brown Shaw, who died on Sunday, May 7th, 2023 at Prisma Health Tuomey, will be held at Sumter Cemetery Tuesday, May 9th, 2023 at 4 o’clock with the Reverend Bob Brearley officiating. Family will receive friends on Monday, May 8th, 2023 4:00 – 6:00pm at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Charles White.

Mrs. Shaw was born on January 7, 1928, to Mary Macaulay Brown and Frank Derrick Brown in Huntersville, NC.  Mary Shaw, as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren and close friends, spent her childhood in Huntersville being raised by her mother, immediate family, and close-knit community as her father passed away early in childhood.  She met her husband of 70 years the late Charles Lemmon Shaw, while he was a student at Davidson College, on its campus.  They were married and made their home in Sumter where they happily resided the remainder of their lives.   Mary Shaw will be remembered as a loving, spirited, and devoted, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mrs. Shaw served as President of the Sumter Junior Welfare League, Sumter Art Association, and Sumter Mental Health Board among other club memberships she held.

Mrs. Shaw is survived by her two children Mary Brown Shaw White and her husband Dr. Charles White and Paul Whitworth “Whit” Shaw and his wife Robin all of Sumter; three granddaughters Mary Macaulay White Smith and her husband Speaker Murrell Smith, Mary Shaw White Finley and her husband Justin and Sarah Corbett Shaw; and three great grandchildren Mary Brown “Bee” Smith, George Murrell Smith, III, and Charles Langston Finley. Also surviving are step grandchildren Matthew Berger and his wife Lori with children Riley and Harry, Sara Tanner and her husband Ben with children Hayes and Ella.

Our family is especially grateful for the tender care given to Mary Shaw through the last several years by her faithful caregivers; Sandy Wheeler, Patty Joe, Patricia Gregg, Jonell Jefferson, Marsha Flowers, Chrissy Osborne, Angie Cunningham, Betty Johnson, Terri House, and Melissa Nelson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Bi-Centennial Fund, at 9 West Calhoun Street, Sumter, South Carolina 29150.
