Ruth Hoyt Obituary

Sumter, SC …….  Ruth Madeline Thurman Hoyt, age 99, beloved wife of the late Col. Robert F. Hoyt, Sr., died on Friday, September 24, 2021.

 Born in Covington, KY, she was the daughter of the late John F. Thurman and Anna Belle Pleasant Thurman. Ms. Hoyt graduated with a BA in Nursing from The Portsmouth General Hospital School of Nursing.  She served as a flight nurse in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. Ruth was a lifetime member of the Rose Douglas, Chapter 475, of the Eastern Star in Wichita, KS.  She was active in the Shaw AFB Officers Wives Club. She went on to work as a nurse at Campbell Soup for many years. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. She loved sharing her love of quilting and was an active member of the Swan Lake Quilting Guild. She delighted in the creating of porcelain dolls, china painting and jewelry making. Ruth was a natural leader and teacher.  She introduced adult coloring at Morningside. Each new female resident received a hand beaded pearl necklace, from her, at Morningside.  Her very infectious smile, blue eyes and laugh made all who met her never forget her.

Surviving are her children, Dr. Robert Franklin Hoyt, Jr. and his wife Brenda of MD and Linda Hoyt Williams and her husband John of PA; five grandchildren, Courtney Thurman Riese, Branston Wagner Williams, Robert Franklin Hoyt, III, Jessica Hoyt Gibson and Allison Brooke Hoyt; nine great grandchildren, Owen Matthew Riese, Sarah Katherine Williams, Hannah Ruth Williams, Blair Victoria Gibson and Cassidy Elizabeth Gibson; one sister, Esther Hunter and her husband Elva.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Richard Allen Hoyt.

A Funeral service be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at 11:00 am at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Laura Whitt and Rev. David Day officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Arlington National Cemetery.
