Sumter, SC … Sara Ginn Altman, beloved wife of 64 years to William “Bill” Altman, passed away Monday, November 1, 2021, at Covenant Place. Born in Goldsboro, North Carolina in 1930, she was the daughter of the late Hester Gurley and Russell Leonard Ginn.
Sara graduated from Winthrop College in 1951 with a major in Art. She taught school in South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia for 28 years, retiring as a Master School Teacher. Sara and Bill married in 1957. In 1962, Sara, her husband and two daughters moved to Sicily, Italy where they lived for 2 ½ years.
After returning to the United States, Sara continued her studies and became a certified Realtor in 1976. She then obtained a Master of Art degree from George Washington University in 1982. After retirement, Sara started a flower arranging business, creating beautiful arrangements for customers, friends, and family. She also loved animals, opening her home to dogs, cats, and even a pet rabbit.
Sara and Bill moved to Sumter 21 years ago to be near family. They became members of Trinity United Methodist Church and the FAHOLA Sunday School class.
She is survived by two daughters; Sharon Kay Berry and Karlin Altman, a nephew William Stokes; a niece Rebecca Stokes; grand-nephew, Kyler Stokes and many dear friends. Sara was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, T. L. Ginn.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 13, 2021, at 2:00 pm, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend Joseph James and Reverend Angela Marshall officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
