Sumter, SC…Virgil Guy Harvey, age 87, beloved husband of Shirley Welch Harvey, died on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
Mr. Harvey is survived by his wife of 65 years, three daughters: Shirlene Skipper and her husband Arless “Linn” Skipper of Sumter, Patricia “Patty” Henderson and her husband Neill of August, GA, Cathleen “Cathy” Kirby and her husband Carroll of Sumter, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and one great granddaughter.
Born in Norton, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Benjamin French Harvey and Velma Skidmore Harvey.
Mr. Harvey served in the United States Air Force and was a Vietnam War Veteran. Virgil also served the citizens of Sumter County in numerous ways. He volunteered with the Cherryvale Fire Department and was the Volunteer Fire Chief for almost 10 years. He served as a reserve Deputy with Sumter County Sheriff’s Department, and he received special recognition from the Sumter Police Department for assisting with Operation KCR. Mr. Harvey retired from City of Sumter Public Works in 2004. He continued to serve Sumter County after retirement by working as a crossing guard for Cherryvale Elementary School.
Virgil spent his life building and perfecting the residence he and his wife share. Virgil was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Virgil loved gardening. He was a member of Hickory Road Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 31, 2021 at 11:00 am in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Bridges officiating.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 30, 2021 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
