Werner Gerhard Schmidt was born March 6, 1950, in Berlin, Germany to Ursula Grella (nee Burger). When Werner was five years old his mother met an American soldier, Emanuel Grella, who was stationed in Berlin. The two fell in love, but Emanuel and Ursula always said it was actually Werner, a sweet little boy, who Emanuel fell in love with first. Emanuel asked Ursula and Werner to move to Brooklyn with him and a few months later they took a boat across the Atlantic to New York. Emanuel’s Italian-American family fully accepted Werner as one of their own and Werner developed a close relationship with his grandmother, Antoinette.
Werner left home as a teenager and enlisted in the army, serving in Germany. Werner had a love of cars, a passion he shared with his younger brother, Raymond, and spent many hours working on them. After working for the railroad system for many years, Werner retired to South Carolina, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Werner passed away on April 4, 2023, at the age of 73. He follows his younger brother Raymond Grella and both his parents, Ursula and Emanuel Grella, and is survived by his nieces, Angela Grella and Nichole Clark, and his nephew, Emanuel Grella.
