Greenville, SC …… William Henry Edwin Nock III passed away in Greenville, South Carolina on September 26, 2022, after a short illness of ALS. His celebration of life will be held on September 30th at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Augusta Street in Greenville, with Reverend Leigh Stuckey and Reverend George Jacobs officiating.
Bill was born June 14, 1945, in Salisbury, Maryland, only son of Ruth Green Nock and William Henry Edwin Nock, Jr. He was raised in Delmar, Maryland.
He won an appointment to the US Coast Guard Academy, graduated in 1967, and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Coast Guard. Bill served in Vietnam as commanding officer of the United States Coast Guard Cutter – Point Mast. At the conclusion of his service in Vietnam, he trained a Vietnamese crew before turning over the cutter to the Vietnamese Navy. Among his medals earned was a Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device. In 1972, Bill attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated with an MBA.
His banking career was in North and South Carolina. He served the National Bank of South Carolina and SouthTrust Bank, Columbia, South Carolina as President before serving as President and CEO of Aiken County National Bank and Sumter National Bank. Bill was Treasurer of the South Carolina Bankers Association, 1993, and President of the Independent Bankers of South Carolina, 1996-1997. He served on the Board of Directors, 1988-1994, of the Charlotte Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.
While living in Sumter, Bill was President of the Sumter Chamber of Commerce, President of the Sumter County Development Board, and involved with the Sumter County Library. He was proud to have served First Presbyterian Church, Sumter, as Deacon, Elder, and Clerk of the Session.
He married Linda Lou Hughes on June 22, 1968. His greatest joy in life was his family. He is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Susan Nock Clark, husband William Scott Clark, daughter Meredith Nock Partridge; grandchildren, Anna Wallace Clark, William Hunter Hughes Clark, and Nancy Stewart Partridge.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 4:30 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605.
