Albert Massie Hicks

Sumter, SC… Albert “Al” Massie Hicks, age 87, beloved husband of 65 years to Evelyn Viola Hicks, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at his home surrounded by loved ones.

Albert, also known as Smokey, was born in Amherst, Virginia, a son of the late Massie Albert Hicks and Verna Johns Hicks. He had a love for music and could play almost any instrument with strings and played in a band called the Stringalongs. He worked for many years as an HVAC technician where he excelled at his job. Albert also enjoyed making swings and was known by many as “The Swing Man”. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He will be remembered as a well-respected man and loving father and husband.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn, Albert is survived by his daughter, Dianne Marie Garrett and her husband Pernell Landon Garrett; grandchildren, Kevin Landon Garrett and his wife Nicole Garrett of Sumter, Kyle Dean Garrett of Sumter and his partner Ashe Cecere of Boston; extended grandchild, Kirstie Harnage; great grandchildren Avonlea Garrett, Adilynn Thompson and Logan Harnage; and a soon-to-be great grandchild Noah Garrett, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Albert Massie Hicks Jr. of Bladensburg, Maryland.
