Alvin "Al" Pack, Jr. Obituary

Alvin “Al” Reed Pack, Jr., age 55, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, in New Mexico.

Born in Sumter, SC, he was the son of Virginia Dale Avins Pack and the late Alvin Reed Pack, Sr. Al worked hard as a welder and crane operator in the Solar fields and the oil fields, primarily from Louisiana to Texas to New Mexico, where he enjoyed being outside in nature and taking in the landscape. He loved to travel all over the country, but particularly loved Montana, Colorado, California, and Washington, for the beautiful mountains, sunsets, and sunrises.  He was a foodie and loved to cook and entertain. He could go from a tux to jeans and boots and driving his jeep in an instant. He also enjoyed being on the water or just sitting around a fire with musicians, just pickin and singing.  Al loved music of all kinds and was a talented musician who played saxophone and guitar. He opened for Confederate Railroad during their concert in Sumter and enjoyed many opportunities to meet many other famous musicians. He loved sharing his talent and love of music, playing in a variety of venues, particularly in Nashville, at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Al’s compassion was boundless. He was a humanitarian who cared deeply for animals and people alike. Politically active and a proud ally to the LGBTQIA+ community, he stood with anyone who felt marginalized. He wanted to make the world kinder and more loving for everyone. His boundless love for others and his activism can be summed up by his own words, “Wherever there is human life, there is an opportunity for kindness.”  Above all, Al loved his family, and his devotion to his mother was unmatched. He will be remembered as a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. His absence will be felt deeply by all whose lives he touched.

In addition to his mother, Virginia Dale Pack, left behind to cherish his memory are his brother, Eddie Pack; his sister, Jennie Pack Self, and her husband, Fred David Self, Jr.; his nephews, Devin Pack and Justin David Self; his niece, Ashleigh Lauren Self; his great-nephews, Maverick Mark Self and Callum Wolfe Bertha; and his great-niece, Ainslie Ruby Self.

In addition to his father, Alvin Reed Pack, Sr., he is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joe and Ellie Pack; his maternal grandparents, Hal and Dorothy Avins; his uncles Joseph Pack, Bennie Pack, and Hazel Pack; and his aunt Sandra.
