Barbara Bell (Schultz)Caughlin, 75, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado and Sumter, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on May n20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Barbara will be remembered for her deep faith, generous heart, and the steady, caring way she welcomed and cared for others throughout her life.
Barbara was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, on December 29, 1950. As a child, She lived in many places while her father served in the Air Force, an experience that helped shape her resilience and adaptability. She graduated from Troy State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
Barbara married Don on August 18, 1973, and together the built a life centered on faith, family, and service. She worked as a laboratory medical technologist in several states and later became certified in hazardous materials management, helping develop a training and safety program at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. She was respected for her knowledge, dedication, and uncommon ability to interpret laboratory tests by hand.
Barbara found great joy in God’s creation and loved skiing, hiking, camping, and evenings around the campfire. She also delighted in tending her gardens, growing vegetables and berries, and caring for her bees. She was someone who naturally put others first. Barbara gave generously of her time and energy, especially through her church, where she supported RCIA and youth programs, served as liturgy coordinator and helped begin what became an annual parish picnic at St. Peter Catholic Church in Monument, Colorado.
Nothing brought Barbara more happiness than her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved cheering them on at games, recitals, and performances, and she remained devoted to her faith and religious studies to the very end, completing a four-year Biblical Studies program and earning a perfect score on her final exam during the week of her passing.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Don: her children, Amy and Jon; her children’s spouses Jerry and Tammy; her grandchildren, Jerry, Eric, Ryan, and Naiya; and her siblings, Warren (Bud), Rebecca (Becky), and Elizabeth (Beth).
Barbara met her passing with peace, laughter, and the comforting presence of thos she loved most. When her granddaughter Naiya asked, “Are you afraid?” Barbara answered with the faith that guided her life; “No, because I am in God’s hands.”
Funeral services will be held on June 2, 2026, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with interment to follow at the United States Air Force Academy and a Celebration of Life at the family home in Black Forest.
