Betsy Smith Obituary

Sumter, SC………….Betsy (Fields) W. Smith, age 79, of Evergreen, N.C. passed away on Sunday, June 28th, 2026, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

She was the youngest of six children born on August 20, 1946, to the late William Taft Fields and the late Lois Loretta (Inman) Fields. Betsy loved life!  She loved good old beach music, oldies (doo-wop, etc.), gospel, and country.  Her favorite dance was the “Shag” and she was good at it!  She was a great cook just like her mother and all of her sisters, and a sharp dresser.  Betsy was a big personality in a small package (small and mighty!), fearless, and extremely strong willed!  She had an impact on each and every person she interacted with.  Courageous, inspiring, kind, loving, and wonderfully funny, she radiated joy and laughter and brought light wherever she went.  She was a ball of fire who showed us all what can be achieved through determination, resilience, and persistence.

Betsy lived her life to the fullest, despite her many challenges.  She was employed with the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Department in the early 70’s while also volunteering with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society in Kingstree, S.C.  She worked for Aiken and Company in Florence, S.C. in the mid 70’s; and then the S.C. Employment Security Commission/Job Service from 1978 until her retirement in 2002.  She took great pride throughout her career, staffing many organizations large and small throughout Kingstree, Florence, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, and Conway, S.C.  While in Columbia, she also helped many young adults ages 16-24 years old excel through the S.C. Job Corps Recruitment Program.

Above all, her greatest joys and proudest accomplishments were her two beloved daughters “Necie and Mandi B.” who she constantly spoke about with a huge smile on her face!  They were the center of her world and the living legacy.

Betsy is survived by her two daughters Denise Walters (Curtis Micheal Britt) of Timmonsville, S.C. and Mandi Beama Walters (Andrew Caleb Pike) of Charleston, S.C.; her sister Amelia Fields Leggett (the late James Perry Leggett, Jr.) of Fairmont, N.C.; several loving nieces and nephews; and her Grand Fur-Babies, Gabby Lane, Sir Micheal Bentley, Sophocles the Greek, Gus, and Stanley.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: William Corbett Fields, Sr., Claudette Fields Blackwell, Polly Fields Welshans, and Joe Thad Fields.

A private family service will be held at the family homesite in Evergreen, N.C. at a later date.

Memorials may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741. https://www.cancer.org/donate/hope.html
