Betty Jean (McPherson) Byrd

Sumter, SC…Betty Jean McPherson Byrd, age 78, beloved wife of sixty years to Joseph Rolf Byrd, died on Monday, July 1, 2019 at her residence.

Born in Kershaw County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Graham McPherson and Ola Mae Norris McPherson. Mrs. Byrd loved to cook and enjoyed sewing. She enjoyed bowling, golf and softball. She was an avid reader. She was very courageous and loved people, especially her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Northside Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Kelly McGrady and her husband Gregory of Sumter, Kimberly Childs and her husband Steve of Aiken, and Karen Byrd-Parker and her husband Charlie of Augusta; three brothers, Donnie McPherson of Timrod, Hazel McPherson and his wife Janice of Timrod, and Gary Dean “John” McPherson and his wife Becky of Oats; four grandchildren, Ashley McGrady, Kathryn McGrady, Noelle Drexelius and her husband Karl and Andrew Mixon and his wife Jaimie; and one great grandchild, Emma Mixon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Travis McPherson, Charles McPherson, Ray McPherson, William McPherson and Basil McPherson; and two sisters, Martha Byrd and Cleola McPherson.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 5, 2019 at 11:00 am in the Northside Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Neal Sweet and Jimmy Holley officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 5, 2019 from 10:00-11:00, one hour prior to the service, at Northside Memorial Baptist Church.
