Carroll Lee Barnette

Sumter, SC……………… Carroll Lee Barnette, 91, beloved husband of over 70 years to Ruth West Barnette, passed away on Tuesday, July 21st, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Barnette was born in Lenoir, NC, a son of the late John and Letha Griffin Barnette. His first job as a teenager was working at a full-service station in Whitnel, NC where he began his start and love for working on cars. He graduated from Hudson High School in Hudson, NC in 1952. He joined the United States Air Force at 19 years old, serving 15 years, 8 months and 25 days in the Vietnam Era. He medically retired as a MSGT. Carroll started Barnette’s Auto Parts in 1959 in his backyard on Dorsey Drive, later moving to Confederate Drive. The business grew from humble beginnings to the present location on St. Paul’s Church Rd spanning over 50 acres and over 67 years. Carroll was a leader in the automotive recycling industry founding the South Carolina Recyclers and Dismantlers Association serving as its first president. He was also a lifetime trustee of Northside Memorial Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, chairman of deacons, youth Sunday School teacher, Men’s Sunday School teacher, and a member of the long-range planning committee He believed in faithfully giving, tithing over and beyond to his church. His love for the Lord was evident in how he led his family and the example he was to others.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: One son, Rev. Mark Barnette and his wife Doris of Wedgefield, SC; Two daughters, LeAnn Woods and her husband Michael of Richmond Hill, GA, and Laura Beyer of Pasadena, TX; Seven grandchildren, Colin C. Davis and his wife Tiffany of Sumter, SC, Jordan Barnette and his wife Becky of Wedgefield, SC, Wesley Davis and his wife Nicole of Florence, SC, Rebecca Barnette Evans and her husband Travis of Sumter, SC, Stephen Woods and his wife Heather of Richmond Hill, GA, Brandon Woods of Ocala, FL, and Aidan Beyer of Pasadena, TX; Ten great grandchildren, Madelynn, Kenleigh, Millie, Sage, Clayton, Griffin ,Piper, Walker, Elliot, and Oliver; a son in law, Bruce McCown of Sumter, SC; and special friends, Melvin Holloman and Jay Davis

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Sabrina Barnette McCown, a sister, Gloria Barnette, a brother, Kermit Barnette, and a son in law, Daniel Beyer.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 24th, 2026, at 11:00am at Northside Baptist Church with the Revs Jimmy Holley, Mac McDowell, Eugene Mosier, and Mark Barnette officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Sumter Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm, Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, at Bullock Funeral Home.
