Charles Blanding Johnson, Sr.

Sumter, SC ….. Charles Blanding Johnson, Sr. , age 79, died on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Born in Manning, SC, he is the son of the late Cecil Heyward Johnson and Stella Ardis Johnson.  Charles proudly served his country for four years by enlisting in the US Army.  After his separation from the Army, Charles began his career as a painter and, over many years, truly perfected his craft. He was very crafty with his hands and loved both sketching and carving walking sticks.  He had a passion for deer hunting and competing in various field trials.  Charles loved his family and friends, but his love for his dogs was second to none.

Charles is survived by a son, Charles Blanding Johnson, Jr. and wife Rhonda Johnson of Sumter; two daughters, Emily Elizabeth Johnson of Florence, SC, and Laura Duke Smith of W. Columbia, SC; a brother, Harold Johnson and wife Linda Johnson of Dalzell, SC; four grandchildren, Aaron Dalton Pritchard, Mazen Alexander Johnson, Makayla Shea Johnson, and Hayden Elizabeth Hasbrook; one great grandson, Drake Pritchard and two special friends, Jimmy Barwick and Hal Tindal.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil Heyward Johnson, Jr., James Leonard Johnson, and David Johnson; and three sisters, Josie Leigh Hudson, Susan Keegan Johnson and Helen Joy.
