Sumter, SC ....... Dorothy Ann Gividen Copeland Day, 80, died peacefully surrounded by family on April 30, 2021 at NHC Sumter. She was born on February 18, 1941 in Slagle, LA to the late Roy Gividen and late Evelyn Ellis.
Her favorite memories as a child included time on her grandparents’ farm in Kentucky and taking care of her siblings. She came to know the Lord at a young age, and she leaves behind a legacy of faith cherished by her family. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for 57 years. Dorothy, or “Dot,” as friends and family often called her, was full of joy and laughter. She was always up for a good game of Scrabble, Canasta or Bingo. She greatly enjoyed her Red Hat Club, Church Circle Club, and singing karaoke. She loved her family and friends so well, always making time to call and send hand written cards or letters. Dorothy’s smile and presence on this earth will be so greatly missed, but her family holds on to the hope and finds comfort in knowing that she is now in her heavenly home.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Ellis, and stepfather, Charles “Clif” Ellis and father, Roy Gividen and stepmother, Gladys Gividen. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Lewis “Butch” Gividen, and her son, John D. Copeland.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne (Glenn) Horton and son, Will (Michell) Copeland; sisters Mary Berndt and Helen Gividen and brothers Larry (Kay) Ellis, Al Gividen, Paul (Sheila) Gividen, and Tom Gividen; grandchildren David Daughrity (Josh Green), Stacey (Josh) Gregory, Stephanie (Bill) Hrisko, and Garrett Horton; great-grandchildren Ella Kate, Banks, and Brynn Gregory; nieces Cheryl (Mike) Combs and Angela (David) Thrasher; nephews Mark Berndt Jr., David (Alyson) Berndt, Matthew Berndt, and Ryan Berndt; grandnieces and grandnephews.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank the members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, the Sonshine Club, the many friends who visited her and sent cards, and the staff of NHC Sumter for their loving care and support.
