Sumter, SC… Dorothy June Matthews Morgan passed away peacefully and surrounded by the love of her family on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Covenant Place, Sumter, SC.
Dorothy (Dot) was born in Pinewood, SC, on June 10, 1923, to Peter Cornelius Matthews and Mary Alice Brown Matthews. She was the youngest of nine children, six boys and three girls. For 53 years, she was the beloved wife of the late Talmadge Rufus Morgan.
She graduated from Edmunds High School in 1940, the first year the school, formerly known as Boys High School, introduced co‑educational classes. Dot continued to reside in Sumter, holding clerical and bookkeeping positions at the Sumter County Clerk of Court and Shaw Lumber Company. In her final career, Dot and Talmadge owned and operated Camden Hardware.
She was a devoted member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Wesley Fellowship Class. She served with her husband as Methodist Youth Fellowship leaders, and worked tirelessly alongside her friends preparing many meals served in the Fellowship Hall.
Dot took immense pride in her family’s military service and was well known for her deep love of country and unwavering patriotism. Her father served in the Spanish‑American War; four of her uncles on her mother’s side (the Browns) served in World War I; and five of her brothers, along with her husband, Talmadge, served in World War II. In a poignant and fitting turn of fate, Dot passed away on Memorial Day, with Taps playing softly in the background.
She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to live on in the many hearts she touched throughout her remarkable 102 years. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her and will be remembered by the many special handwritten notes and cards she sent her friends and family.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughters, Donna Morgan Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Debora Morgan Lane and her husband, Jerry, of Columbia, SC; her grandchildren, Alison Speight, Ashley Smith, and Grainger Shelley and his wife Taylor; step grandson, Collin Lane and his wife, Juliette; and her great-grandchild, Preston Speight; and step great-grandchildren, Harless Lane and Harrison Lane; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by her brothers, Peter Cornelius Matthews, Jr., Daniel Brown Matthews, Adger (Big Boy) Stokes Matthews, Percey (Tiny) Matthews, Hugh Matthews, and Archie Matthews; her sisters, Madeline Sydnor and Mildred Moore, and her beloved son-in-law, Kenneth Edward Smith.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 1:00-2:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 2:00 pm in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service at Sumter Cemetery.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the tender care given to Dorothy during her final weeks by her faithful caregivers Rita Hampton and Adrenia Williams.
They would also like to thank Sammy Way for his devotion, tireless hours, and diligent work to honor Sumter’s Military Veterans, including Talmadge Morgan and Dot’s brothers.
