Obituary

Dortha “Dot” Machen, born Dortha Glenice Anderson, passed away on Sunday, May 14,
2023 in Greenville, South Carolina at the age of 93. Dot was born on March 13th, 1931
in Woodville, Alabama to parents Vera Maude Hodges Anderson and Samuel Howard
Anderson. Dot was preceded in death by her siblings Charles Rayburn “Buck”, Rosa
Katherine “Kat”, Eva Lois, Samuel Howard Junior “June”, Alice Mildred, and Irma Joyce.
Dot was married to Eugene “Gene” Wheeler Machen in 1952, In their 65 years of
marriage, she was a loving and faithful wife. She is survived by two daughters, Belinda
Jean Meadows and Melissa Elizabeth Black, four grandchildren, Romeo Machen, Traci
Lynn Crislip, Katie Elizabeth Pernotto, and Gene Ryan Crislip, and four great-
grandchildren.
Dot had an innate ability for hospitality. She had a heart for adventure and travel, but
also kept a warm and welcoming home filled with stories, laughter, and a home-cooked
meal.
Dot used her sharp intellect to help others throughout her life. She assisted her uncle in
his medical practice and spent years selling insurance. But she was best remembered
as a stylish, card-playing, made-from-scratch cook, and avid gardener who never
missed an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, often with a tall glass of iced tea in her
hand. In her later years, she loved to spend time playing and laughing with her great-
grandchildren. Her love of life, warm, welcoming personality, and kindheartedness will
be forever missed by those who knew and loved her.
Dot had a long and full life—everyone thought she would live forever. Even though we
feel an immense sense of loss in her not being with us, we can joyfully celebrate that
she is reunited with many who have gone before her and undoubtedly missed her as
well.
Dot was a true matriarch of her family. She loved deeply and touched all those who
were blessed enough to know her. Her care and commitment to her family knew no
bounds. It is only fitting that she would find eternal rest on Mother’s Day because she
was the most fitting and loved person to be called mother and grandmother.
