Sumter, SC………. Douglas “Doug” Paul Anderson, age 61, beloved husband of 41 years to Janet Lee Burger Anderson, died on Thursday, December 14th, 2023 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.

Mr. Anderson was born in Leadville, CO, a son of the late William Anderson and Frances Burgess Prather. Doug enlisted in the Air Force in the early 1980s, served on active duty for 24 years, and retired as a Master Sergeant. His military service included deployments to Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm, twice to Korea for Army support, Eielson Air Force Base Alaska, and Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. His last duty position was as a Detachment Chief and his military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal. Doug served as a DOD technician at Shaw Air Force Base after his retirement to assist service members with the transition to the weather hub concept of operations. He worked in operations for the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Doug joined the National Weather Service (NWS) at WSO Bethel, Alaska in 2013 as a Meteorological Technician. He returned to South Carolina in 2015 as an HMT at WFO Columbia. He received an on station promotion to the OPL position in 2020. He led one of the best Operations Program Leader programs in the NWS with multiple Holm and Jefferson Award recipients, experimental observing platform demonstrations.  He also served as a workplace violence advocate and received formal recognition from NOAA for his accomplishments and advocacy.

Doug served as WFO Columbia’s NWSEO Steward from 2018 to 2023. He provided essential support and partnership to his Meteorologist in Charge during and after the COVID pandemic. He helped address the concerns of bargaining unit employees regarding workplace changes, extensive telework, vaccine mandates, and the return to the office in 2022.

Doug was an avid amateur radio operator and led the office’s Skywarn Spotter Program. His last day in office was hosting his service area’s operators for the annual Skywarn Spotter Appreciation Day with more than thirty participants, static exhibits, and multiple tours and presentations. He also volunteered with the Audubon Society banding birds in Fairbanks, AK. Doug was the former Chief Operating Officer of the Sumter Y.M.C.A. and was a member of Wise Drive Baptist Church. Doug will be remembered as a very proud father and grandfather. His hobbies included camping trips with his wife and family, hunting, fishing and his Ham radios. He was an avid nature lover and history buff. His kindness towards people will never be forgotten.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: One son, Kellin Audreylynn Anderson of Eugene, OR; two daughters, Aimee Marie Anderson and her fiancé Keith Steele of Sweet Home, OR, and Alicia Anne Anderson and her partner Derek Katz of Gray Court, SC; Two sisters, Kerri Harding and her husband Bruce of Canby, OR, and Velina Ball and her husband Mike of Littleton, CO; and two grandchildren, Annalee Dawn Anderson and Arya Raven Katz, both of Gray Court, SC.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, December 21st, 2023 at Wise Drive Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Beacham officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00-2:00pm, Thursday, December 21st, 2023 at Wise Drive Baptist Church.
