Sumter, SC ……. Dr. John Elliott “Jack” Rowe III, age 87, beloved husband of 57 years to Hazel Anne Gramling Rowe, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at his residence.
Born and raised in Manning, SC, he was the son of the late John Elliott Rowe, Jr and Sara Shirer Rowe. Jack graduated from Manning High School and then went on to the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and received his bachelor’s degree, in premedical. He continued his education and received a M.D. degree at MUSC in Charleston and completed his internship at University Hospital in Augusta, GA. Jack then joined the US Navy where he served as a Battalion Medical Officer, also in the third Marine Division in Okinawa and as a part of the medical staff at the US Naval Hospital in Charleston. After his time in the US Navy, Jack completed his Pediatric Residency at MUSC.
It was during his time in Charleston where Jack met and married Hazel Anne. They settled in Sumter and they joined Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a former member of the Executive Committee and a longtime member of Boyle Bible Class. Jack was one of the three founding partners of Sumter Pediatrics, where he served the community for 50 years. During these 50 years, Jack held many positions in the Sumter community. He served as Chief of Staff at Tuomey Hospital, as well as several terms as Chief of Pediatrics, he was a member of the American Medical Association, SC Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatrics, the SC Medical Association, and a member of Maternal, Infant, and Child Health Committee.
Jack was an avid Gamecock fan and supported his team through both the alumni associations and a long-time member of the USC Gamecock Club. His true joy in life was his family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, devoted pediatrician, and friend to all. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Jack is survived by; a son, John Elliott Rowe IV and his wife Alexa of Sumter; a daughter, Julie Gramling Rowe of Sumter; two grandchildren, William Hampton Rowe and John Elliott “J.E.” Rowe V.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 3:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph James officiating. Entombment will follow the service in the Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2:00-3:00 pm, at Trinity United Methodist Church.
