Sumter, SC ….. Dr. Samuel Jacques Corbin, Jr., age 87, beloved husband of 37 years to Arlene Nelson Goodwin Corbin, died on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at his residence in Sumter, SC. Born in Columbia, SC, at Providence Hospital on February 2, 1939, he was the son of the late Samuel Jacques Corbin, Esq. and Dorothy Mae Miller Corbin. As a young child, he moved to Charleston, SC, where he grew up with his two sisters. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts and worked to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, a distinction that reflected his lifelong dedication to leadership, discipline, and community.
He attended The Citadel and graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from the College of Dentistry. He later graduated from the College of Charleston, completing his pre‑medical coursework, and went on to earn his medical degree from MUSC.
Sam proudly served his country as an officer during the Vietnam War in the United States Air Force for nearly seven years. During this time, he was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, where he served as a medical doctor. After completing his military service, he made his home in Sumter, where he practiced medicine for many years until his retirement. Sam was a member of the American Medical Association and the South Carolina Medical Association. He annually attended several meetings both in and out of the state. He was deeply committed to his patients and to the community he served.
An avid outdoorsman. He belonged to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Sam was a backpacker and hiked more than 1,200 miles on the Appalachian Trail in increments, embracing the challenge and beauty of the journey. He was a member of the YMCA and, for many years, would go to the “Y” at lunchtime to work on the treadmill and socialize. Sam was also a member of the Gamecock Club and an enthusiastic fan of the USC football team.
He found great joy in being a physician, was an enthusiastic reader, and had a passion for photography, music, and traveling. Sam was quick-witted and had a provocative sense of humor. He loved his wife and family and enjoyed being with them. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play softball, baseball, playing at the beach, and teaching them to tie knots. He loved the beach and family vacations at Edisto. Sam leaves behind his family, friends, and beloved animals. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughters: Lisa Corbin Caliendo and her husband Thomas, Daphne Corbin McCaffrey and her husband Jude, Jill Goodwin Chapman and her husband Trevar, Kristen Goodwin Cottle and her husband Austin, Stacy Goodwin Scoggins and her husband Brian; his sons, Stephen Corbin, and his wife Sundy, and Alexander Goodwin, who he raised as his son; his sister, Susan Corbin Spann and her husband Joseph; his grandchildren, Sarabeth Chapmon, Matthew Chapmon, Benjamin Chapmon, J Abraham Chapmon, Mary Margaret Chapmon, Elijah Chapmon, Andrew Goodwin, Isabella McCaffrey, Grace Corbin, and Laurel Corbin; and his great-grandchildren, Madeline Edmonds, Grayson Chapmon, Isabella Mose, Katie Goodwin, and Mackenzie Baker.
