Sumter, SC… Elizabeth Boykin Allen M.D., age 98, wife of the late Julian Allen, died September 29, 2023.

Mrs. Allen was born in Sumter, SC, the daughter of the late William deSaussure and Elizabeth (Bessie) Hood Boykin. She graduated from Edmunds High School in 1942, Winthrop University in Rock Hill in 1946, and from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1950. She completed an internship, three years of pediatric residency and teaching fellowship in pediatrics at MUSC. A gifted physician, she practiced pediatrics in Aiken, SC, Atlanta, GA, practiced in Hawaii pre-statehood, and was chief of Pediatrics at two major hospitals in Atlanta. She retired in 1986 and returned to her hometown, Sumter, SC. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg and moved to Columbia, SC in 2014.

Survivors are: Three sons, Seth Eugene Latham Jr., Richard Boykin Latham (Amber) with their three children Luke Latham, Sophie Latham, and Emily Schrick (Richie), and William deSaussure Latham; One daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Latham Farfour, her children Sierra Boyle (Sean) and Ethan Gamble (Leandra) and four great grandchildren; three stepchildren, Joyce McCarrell, Landrum I. McCarrell Jr. M.D., and Nancy McCarrell.

She was preceded in death by husbands Seth Eugene Latham, Sr. M.D., Lewis Edward Leavell Jr., Landrum I. McCarrell Sr. M.D., and Julian Allen.

A private service will be held by the family.

Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Elbert Byrd, Sr., Dr. John Holliday, Dr. Charles R. Propst, Dr. W. Baynard Boykin, E. Steven Libby, Grady Locklear, Frank Elbert Byrd, Jr., Conway E. Black, John Cornelius Klapthor, Edward B. Latimer Sr., Thomas E. Player, Jr., Henry B. Richardson, Jr. and Frederick B. Beck.
