Ernest Larry Barnes

Sumter, SC…Ernest Larry Barnes, age 81, beloved husband of Jerri Jean Walker Barnes, died on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Born in Bacon County, GA, he was the son of the late JC Barnes and Lucille Wells Barnes. Mr. Barnes served in the US Army from 1957-1960 and was stationed in Germany. Following his military service, he went on to work and retire for Lance Snack Company, was a sales manager for Golden Flake and was a district manager for Liberty National Life Insurance Company in the Sumter, Columbia, and Savannah markets. In addition, he drove a school bus for the Sumter County Schools and delivered The Sumter Item Newspaper. Mr. Barnes enjoyed singing and was the lead singer for the Harmony Quartet. He was a member of Bethesda Church of God and former member of Carpenter Road Church of God in Tifton, GA where he served as the choir director.  

In addition to his wife Jerri, he is survived by one daughter, Julie DuBose and her husband Neil and two grandchildren, Hayley Michelle DuBose and Walker McNeil DuBose all of Sumter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jay Claudius Barnes.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, June 6, 2021 at 3:00 pm in the Bethesda Church of God with the Revs. Neil DuBose and Al Sims officiating. The interment will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 2:00 pm in the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 6, 2021, from 2:00-3:00 pm at the Bethesda Church of God.
