Sumter, SC………Mr. Freddie B. Gamble, 76, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, with his beloved wife, Mrs. Myra Gamble beside him.
Fred and Myra married in Jamaica in 1970 and moved to New Jersey, just one year after the two fell in love. The two were married for 53 happy years. Fred and his younger sister, Cynthia B. Owens, (Coatesville, PA), were born in Lakewood, NJ and raised in Whiting, NJ. Fred was the father to Sherman, Michelle, Lonnie, Ayeola, Althia and Teshoma.
Fred was a baker with Sunshine Biscuits for 38 years. As a pastime, he enjoyed racing cars at Englishtown Raceway Park and riding motorcycles. He also enjoyed horticulture, African-drumming, reggae music, nature walks and time with his family sharing memories and fun times growing up on the family farm in Forked River, NJ.
At the age of 51, the couple moved to Sumter, SC, in 1999, where they enjoyed their early retirement together. Frequent visits to North Carolina and Jamaica provided times to visit with family and friends. The two also enjoyed travel throughout the U.S. and abroad, spending time with their children and grandchildren, as well as sharing time together in their own backyard, where they gardened fruits and vegetables.
Fred was known as someone who never had a negative thing to say about anyone. His smile was contagious. He will be greatly missed.
Fred was predeceased by father Austin Battle and mother Eloise Gamble.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.
