Sumter, SC – Gerald “Jerry” Eugene Chavey, age 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
Born on December 28, 1929, in Los Angeles, CA, Jerry was the son of the late Arthur Fred Chavey and Edith Myers Chavey. A devoted member of St. Anne’s and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, Jerry's faith was a cornerstone of his life.
Jerry proudly served his country in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, retiring after a distinguished career. He was a Korean War veteran and continued to serve in various government capacities, including a long tenure with Lockheed Martin. His commitment to both his country and his community left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Jerry is survived by his three children: two sons, Christopher Stephen Chavey and his wife Jeannie, and Andrew Timothy Chavey and his wife Melody, all of Sumter, SC; and one daughter, Susan Melissa Chavey Barfield and her husband Benjamin of Sumter, SC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Emily Harvin, Scott Harvin, Blake Chavey, Jennifer O’Connor, Rachel Ballard, Elena Burrows, Jacob Chavey, and Stephen Chavey; as well as four great-grandchildren. Jerry is further survived by two nieces, Linda Lankford and Becky Urrutia.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Chavey, and his nephew, Timothy Chavey.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025 at 11:00am at St. Anne’s St. Jude Roman Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will be held on Thursday, January 30th, 2025 at 3:00pm at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 16 Kendrick St., Sumter, SC, 29150, or St. Anne’s St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 1855 Beckwood Rd., Sumter, SC 29153.
