Sumter, SC… Gloria LaRue Byrd Wilson, age 89, beloved wife of the late David John Wilson, Sr., passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at her home.
LaRue was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Jasper Owen Wilson and the late Thelma Cottle Wilson. She found joy in spending time at the local VFW and dancing with friends in the shag club. She cherished her beloved cats, Pumpkin and Misty, and held her family closest to her heart. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, great‑great‑grandmother, sister, and friend. Her presence touched many lives, and she will be deeply missed.
LaRue is survived by her sons, David John Wilson, Jr. and his wife Ellen, Robert Owen Wilson, and Captain Benjamin Wade Wilson and his girlfriend Amy; her sister, Decoma Daughtry; her grandchildren, Bryan, Robert, Steven, Bradley, Anthony, Tonya, Peggy and her husband Jay, and Christopher and his wife Angelina; her great-grandchildren, Rhylee, Chance, Ryker, Robyn, Regan, Bayla, Annemarie, James, Chad, Kamryn, and her great-great grandchild, Ka’vora.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, George Wade Byrd, Jr, and Benjamin Byrd; her sisters, Kay Johnson and Vernell Strayhorn; her grandson, Richard; and her daughter-in-law, Carol Wilson.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the local VFW #3034, the Sumter SPCA, or the local police department in her memory.
