Gwyn Monroe Obituary

Chapel Hill, NC …. Gwyn Curtis Thorne Monroe died suddenly, yet peacefully, on June 5th, 2022, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. She was surrounded by family members who held her hands to her final breaths until she departed this world for her heavenly home.

Gwyn was born on July 24th, 1954, in Jacksonville, FL. She was the third of four daughters born to William “Bill” and Olive “Lolly” Thorne (Evans). She grew up in Atlanta, GA in a loving family with her three sisters, with whom she has grown ever closer in recent years. Gwyn was raised in a Christian family. She lived her life in service of the Lord and found comfort in the teachings of Jesus Christ. She graduated from Langley High School in McLean, VA and applied her impeccable financial management and organizational skills to her career in periodontal and dental office management in Northern Virginia. In 1979 she married her now former husband and father of her children, Danny Monroe Sr., and together they raised sons Danny Scott Monroe, Jr. born in 1980 and William “Justin” Monroe born in 1981. Gwyn was a loving, devoted, and supportive mother until her final days. While she never had daughters of her own, her daughters-in-law, Sarah and Joyce, were always loved as such. Gwyn was selfless, intelligent, caring, generous with her time, and accepting of all. She was a lover of animals and adored dogs, especially her Gracie. Gwyn always put family first in everything she did and strived to give her children a joy-filled childhood like the one she experienced. In this, she found tremendous success, and the love she passed to her children lives through them to her grandchildren. Gwyn’s family was everything to her. She adored her grandchildren Mia, Jack, Jordan, Josie, and John. Recently, she was ecstatic to begin a new chapter of her life with long-time friend and fiancé, Scott Chapman of Garland, TX. Gwyn is survived by her son Danny Monroe, Jr., daughter-in-law Sarah Taylor, and grandchildren Mia and Jack Monroe of Durham, NC; and son Justin Monroe, daughter-in-law Joyce Monroe, and grandchildren Jordan, Josie, and John Monroe of Fredericksburg, VA. She is also survived by her father William Thorne of Columbus, GA and sisters, Patricia Thorne (Jarrett) White of Columbus, GA; Alice Thorne Jordan and her husband Guy of Gainesville, GA; and Elise Carroll Thorne Cope of Raleigh, NC, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Gwyn was preceded in death by her mother, Lolly Thorne, and her beloved nephews Stephen Jordan and Thomas “Austin” Cope.
