CMSgt. Harry D. Champy, Jr., United States Air Force (Retired), passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, in Dalzell, South Carolina. Born in Cameron, S.C., on August 10, 1938, he was a proud graduate of Cameron High School, Class of 1956.
Harry enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly after graduation, beginning a distinguished career that spanned nearly three decades. After a brief break in service in 1960, he re-enlisted and continued serving until his retirement on May 1, 1983. His early years in the Air Force were marked by technical excellence—completing Airborne Radar Maintenance School and later cross-training into the Radio Relay and Microwave Maintenance fields, where he served for eighteen years.
In 1976, he was assigned to the 21TASS at Shaw Air Force Base as Ground Radio Communications Superintendent. When the Tactical Air Control career field was established the following year, he remained with the unit, later advancing to Tactical Air Command and Control Superintendent until his retirement. His career included fourteen years of overseas assignments, with service in Germany, Italy, and Iran, as well as stateside postings at Robins AFB (GA), Bergstrom AFB (TX), and Shaw AFB (SC).
CMSgt. Champy’s dedication earned him numerous commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. His professionalism and leadership left a lasting impact on those who served alongside him.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his two sons, Dr. Harry D. Champy, III, and his wife Connie of Gainesville, GA, and Timothy Ron Champy, three grandchildren, Rebekah (Ryan), Noah, and Brandon (Danea), and two great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Adelaide, and his brother Perry and his wife Gloria of Panorama City, CA.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his sister, Paulette Champy Mims, and her husband, Julian Mims of Edgefield, SC.
