Herbert Wright Obituary

Sumter, SC ...........Mr. Herbert Edward Wright age 81 a former longtime resident of Damascus passed away on May 24, 2013 at his home in Pinewood South Carolina due to cardiovascular arrest and dementia. He was the widower of Barbara Watkins Wright who had passed earlier that same year.

Born March 30, 1932 in Washington DC he was the son of the late Berkeley and Catherine Kail Wright. Mr. Wright attended Roosevelt High School in Washington DC and obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1954 from Randolph Macon College in Virginia. After college he began his career with the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) as a chemist at several generating plants. He retired in 1988 from the Dickerson Plant after 33 years of service.

He was a veteran that served in the United States Army Reserves and retired in 1982 at the rank of First Sargent. He was a lifelong member of the American legion and a former member of the Damascus Jaycees.

After retirement he and his wife sought a warmer climate and in 1995 moved from their home in Adamstown to Pinewood South Carolina where he could enhance his love of gardening by obtaining additional land and enjoying longer growing season. He loved his animals but was extremely fond of his dogs especially the late “Boss” & “Sis”

He enjoyed spending time around their pools with family friends and of course the dogs. He also liked watching Redskins games and the Indy 500 race which he used to attend in his younger days. He also enjoyed working in his shed preparing and decorating gourds and lake fishing.
Surviving are his son Steven D. Wright and wife Amy of Cellina Texas, and four step children, Diane M. Gillis and husband, Craig, of New Market; Karin E. Fowler of Pinewood; Donald R. (Rusty) Watkins of Pinewood and Michael C. Watkins and wife, Alethia, of Damascus; 1 grandchild, 6 step grandchildren & 5 great step grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his long-time friend, Dave Dallatore of Las Vegas N.V. who he shared many good times with.
In addition to his wife and parents Mr. Wright is predeceased by his brother Berkley Wright.
A private memorial service will be held.
