James "Jim" Weir

James Weir Obituary

Sumter, SC…………… James “Jim” Weir, age 84, beloved husband of 63 years to Mary Ann Ruffalo Weir, died on Thursday, January 23rd, 2025, at the Columbia VA Healthcare System.

Mr. Weir was born in Patterson, NJ, a son of the late Joseph Weir and Elizabeth Euforbio Weir. He was an accomplished trumpet player, playing in a band before joining the service.  Jim was a Navigator in the United States Air Force, serving his country for 24 years. He flew E B-66’s in the Cuban Missile Crisis and later in Southeast Asia providing electronic air cover for strike aircraft, where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. He later flew C-141’s out of Charleston where he was a part of the evacuation when the US exited Vietnam in 1975. He retired as a Lt. Col. out of the 9th Air Force Command Post. After retirement, Jim got his real estate license and later opened Jimmy’s Bar. He was a member of St. Anne’s St. Jude Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the VFW, American Legion, MRMA and the Elks.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: Two sons, Joseph Weir and his wife Maryann of Columbia, SC, and Arthur Weir and his wife Beth of Sumter, SC; One sister, Maureen Howe of Syracuse, NY; and three grandchildren, Kevin Weir, Sarah Weir and Hailey Weir.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Eicher and Maryann Crumpton.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, January 30th, 2025, at St Anne’s St Jude Roman Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm, Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, at Bullock Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 6:00pm.
