Joanne Barela Obituary

In Loving Memory of Joanne Bright Barela.

Joanne Bright Barela, 66, of Sumter, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, September 24, 2026, surrounded by the love that she had spent a lifetime giving so freely to others. To know Joanne was to know what it meant to be loved.

Born in Englewood, New Jersey, on April 13, 1960, Joanne was the daughter of the late Albert George Bright Sr. and the late Norma Jean Jaehrling Bright. For 45 years, she was the devoted wife and best friend of her beloved husband, Ralph Barela, Jr. Together, they built a family, a home, and a lifetime of memories rooted in love, strength, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

Joanne had a creative soul and gifted hands and was the kind of woman who could make something out of nothing; whether it was creating a wonderful meal from whatever was in the kitchen or turning fabric and thread into beautiful clothes for the people she loved. She crafted clothing for her children and grandchildren and created beautiful floral arrangements for their weddings. But perhaps her greatest creation was the family she nurtured so completely.

As a military wife, she faced the challenges and uncertainties that came with that life with extraordinary courage. She didn’t simply endure those challenges – she rose above them, creating a loving and stable home for her family wherever life took them. She taught her children independence and self-sufficiency; not by telling them how to live, but by showing them through the way she herself lived.

Joanne was always there. She was the person you could call when you needed a shoulder to cry on, sage advice – or simply someone who would sit beside you and listen without judgement. Her children’s friends affectionately knew her as Momma “B,” because Joanne never limited her love to her own children. Her heart was enormous. She adored her thirteen grandchildren and cherished every moment of being a grandmother. Each one held a special place in her heart, and she made sure they knew they were loved. Her legacy will live on not only in the memories they carry, but in the kindness, strength, independence, creativity, and unconditional love she passed down to them.

Joanne was a devoted wife, a fiercely loving mother, a treasured grandmother, a beloved sister, and a true friend. She was the woman who showed up, the woman who listened, the woman who made sure everyone else was taken care of before herself, and the woman whose presence made a house feel like a home. Her absence will leave a space that cannot be filled, but her love will remain – in the family she built, the traditions she created, the meals and stories shared around tables, the beautiful things she made by her hands, and, most of all, in the hearts of every person fortunate enough to have been loved by her.

Joanne leaves behind her beloved husband, Ralph Barela, Jr.; her children, Lenea Ann Barela-Lewis and her husband Wade, Nicole Deanna Brennan and her husband Eddie, Jared Kieran Barela and his wife Tabitha, Kaitlin Tianna Barela-Reichert and her husband Ryan, Ethan Jaemes Barela and his wife Leah, and Zachery Crittenden Barela and his wife Apisara; her siblings, Bonnie Ellen Bright and her husband Robert, Albert “Dusty” George Bright, Jr. and his wife Barbara, and Timothy Scott Bright and his wife Kristi; and her thirteen grandchildren, Madeline Josephine Lewis, Oliver Rhett Lewis, Robyn Lynn Barela, Riley Ann Barela, Kieran Alexander Barela, Eirallyn Rosalie Reichert, Ezra Nathaniel Reichert, Elias Emmanuel Karl Reichert, Emmerich Iulius Reichert, Caius Luca Barela, Elliana Maeve Barela, Minerva Artis Barela, and Jericho Leora Barela-Nokaew.
