Wedgefield, SC…John Samuel Hassler, age 88, beloved husband of 60 years to the late Edeltraud “Trudy” Neidermier Hassler, died on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at MUSC Health Columbia Downtown.
Born in Lebanon, PA, he was the son of the late William Hassler and May Catherine Singer Hassler. John joined the US Air Force after high School. He served in many countries and was stationed all over the world including a period in Vietnam during the war. John retired in 1982, as a CMSGT, after over 33 years of service. Known by all as a man of high integrity and dependability, he served, not only as a very dedicated and highly respected Veteran, but continued to serve as a volunteer for the D.A.V. for many years.
John was a constant source of strength and support to his family, friends and those in need. John or ‘Opa’ to his beloved grandkids, loved to gather with family and friends. Every morning he met with friends for breakfast and never missed an opportunity to bring his family together. He took pride and action into making sure that his children and grandchildren were successful in all of their endeavors. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and is now reunited with his beloved wife, ‘Momma’
Surviving to cherish his memories are; John L. Hassler and his wife Terrie of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Eric Hassler and his wife DeeDee of Sumter, and Lonnie L. Hassler, Sr. and his wife Jackie of Wedgefield, SC; one daughter, Sandra L. Chieze and her husband Don of Hayden, ID; nine grandchildren, Allen Chieze and his wife Erin, Sherri Kokinakis and her husband John, Danielle Hassler, Simon Hassler, Leif Hassler, Dakota Hassler, Garrett Hassler, Eric B. Hassler, and Lonnie L. Hassler, Jr.; eleven great grandchildren, Vincent, Victor, Jacob, Shane, Emily, Devin, Sonny, Lily, Roman, Addison, and Corben; one great-great grandson, Xion, and his beloved dog Baby.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by a grandson, Sam Hassler, four brothers, Leroy Hassler, Alvin Hassler, Lloyd Hassler, and Harry Hassler, and a sister, Sue Eisenhauer.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 4:00 pm with Rev. Tommy McDonald officiating. The service will conclude with full military honors.
The family will receive friends, one hour prior to the service, on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 3:00-4:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
