John F Pettenger

Sumter, SC …. John Foster Pettenger Jr., age 78, beloved husband of the late Barbara Ann Pettenger, died on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at his residence. 

Born in Patterson, NJ, he was the son of the late John Foster Pettenger Sr. and Muriel Elizabeth Shenise Pettenger. John graduated from UGA with a bachelor's degree, GO Dawgs!!!; John was a Pilot for Piedmont Airlines, US Air for 13 years. John was a retired US, Air Force Pilot for 21 years. He was a Vietnam Veteran and for his service he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 5 Oak Clusters and Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. John was an avid hunter especially deer. He hunted almost every day. He will be remembered as a very loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. 

He is survived by; two son’s John F. Pettenger III. (Julie) of Irmo.; and Brian Pettenger of Sumter; a daughter, Kelly Nolan of Sumter, a brother, James Pettenger (Dawn) of Sumter, and a sister, Cherie Hiller of Concord, NC.; eight, grandchildren, and one, great-grandchild. 

Services will be private.
