Sumter, SC … Joseph Michael Giffin, age 55, beloved husband of Bonnie Johnson Giffin, died on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Prisma Health Tuomey.
Born in Leesburg, FL, he was the son of James Burns Giffin and Shirley Ann Stephens Giffin. Joey graduated from Furman High School and then enlisted in the US Army where he served proudly with the 1st Airborne Unit. After he separated from the army, Joey started a career as a long-distance truck driver. Joey was always known for his smile, laughter and grand entrances. He enjoyed life and loved to make people laugh. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his Harley. He was a passionate Gamecock fan and especially enjoyed watching football and women’s basketball. His true joy in life came from spending time with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by four children, Forrest Michael Giffin of Dalzell, SC, Lakin Giffin Powell and her husband Taylor of Sumter, SC, R. Xavier Johnson and his wife Leah of Warren, PA, and Courtney Hughes and her husband Jessie of Sumter, SC; a brother, James Giffin, Jr. of Union, SC; two sisters, Sonya Giffin of Columbus, NC, and Tammy Giffin Tyler and her husband Ty of Lexington, SC; five grandchildren, Maverick, Easton, Hendrix, Alden, and Zadie, and two special nieces, Teal & Tristin.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at 1:00 pm in the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with military honors.
