Sumter, SC .......... Col. Joseph Francis Schang, age 86, beloved husband of 59 years to Marion Elizabeth Crowley Schang, died on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
Born on February 10, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Joseph Francis Schang and Mary Beaston Schang.
Col. Schang was a graduate of St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia. He completed the ROTC program while there and received his commission in the U.S. Air Force in December, 1961. Later in his career, he received a Master of Arts in Education from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. Col. Schang also attended several military professional schools which included the Armed Forces Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
Throughout his 27-year career in the U.S. Air Force, Col. Schang was in the Security Police field. Among his many tours of duty were Turner Air Force Base, Georgia; Goose Air Base, Labrador, Canada; Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska; Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas; Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland; Wueschheim Air Station, West Germany; and finally Headquarters 9th Air Force, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.
After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Col. Schang had a productive second career at Piedmont Technical College, Greenwood, South Carolina, running the Continuing Education program for over ten years.
When fully retired, he enjoyed working on his two main hobbies: gardening and model trains. His hanging flower baskets were exceptionally beautiful; and his grandchildren loved watching the trains go round in his train shed.
In addition to his wife, Col. Schang is survived by his son CAPT (ret.) Timothy J. Schang, U.S. Coast Guard, (Eva) of Madison, Connecticut; his daughter Katherine E. McCaskey, (Steven), of Sumter; five grandchildren: Jamie E Stone (Phillip), Sarah K. McCaskey; Eric J. McCaskey all of Sumter; Madison S. and Blair D. Schang of Madison, Connecticut; and there are three great-grandchildren: Kyleen E., Kathleen S. and Rowan J. Stone of Sumter.
Col. Schang is also survived by a sister, Mary E. O’Brien of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, and a brother, Charles J. Schang of Runnemede, New Jersey, and several first cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Michael.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately after the service with a luncheon in the reception room at Bullock Funeral Home.
The inurnment will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 1:30 pm in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
