Sumter, SC ….. Lionel Adelard Viens, age 88, beloved husband of, 45 years to the late Shirley Mary Doucette Viens, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at his residence.
Born in Holyoke, MA, he was the son of the late Lionel Valdric Viens and Maryjane Leda Couture. After high school, Lionel joined the US Air Force, where he worked in accounting and finance. He served for over 20 years, retiring in 1984 as a TSgt. Lionel married the love of his life, Shirley, in 1976 and was married for over 45 years until she passed away in 2021. Raised in Massachusetts, Lionel was an avid fan of all Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox. Locally, he enjoyed watching both South Carolina and Clemson sports as well as working in his garden.
He is survived by: one son, Robert Krantz and his wife Debbie of Escanaba, MI; four daughters, Kathy Schaefer of Sykton, MO, Teresa Marshall and her husband Jerry of Sumter, SC, Juanita Viens of Appleton, WI and Mary Anne Perkins of Bangor, ME; an adopted daughter, DeeDee Ellis and her husband Dale of Sanford, NC; six grandchildren, Angela and Bobby Krantz, Elizabeth Mansfield and her husband Allan, Kevin Lee and wife Caitlin, Brian Lee and wife Jennie, and Phillip Marshall and wife Merissa; and seven great grandchildren, Elliana and Mason Lee, Beckett Lee, Brooks Lee, Kaitlyn and Zander Mansfield, and Thea Marshall.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by a son-in-law, Larry Schaefer.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 12:00 pm in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.
The interment will be held following the service, on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 2:00 pm, at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 11:00–12:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
