Major (Retired, USAF) Marion Allan Viers Jr., 83, husband of nearly 15 years to Jane Luther Smith, died on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at his home after an extended battle with pleural mesothelioma.
He was born in Elyria, Ohio, on July 29, 1942, and baptized on Palm Sunday in 1943 at the Berlin Presbyterian Church in Galena, Ohio. Allan was the oldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Marion Allan Viers Sr. of Delaware, Ohio, and the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elza Viers of Lewis Center, Ohio, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Barrows of Galena, Ohio.
Mr. Viers was a graduate of The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, with a degree in geography. He earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Webster College, St. Louis, Missouri. He was a retired United States Air Force Officer and fighter pilot. After his career in the Air Force, he was employed by Boeing Aerospace as manager of the mission Training Center, Shaw Air Force Base, where he conducted flight simulator and academic training for F-16 Air Force pilots until his retirement in 2017.
During his over 20 years as an ace Air Force fighter pilot, he was awarded numerous decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons, including the distinguished flying cross with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Meritorious service medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with two silver and one bronze oak leaf cluster, Air Force commendation medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Air Force outstanding unit award with one bronze oak leaf cluster, combat readiness medal and the national defense service medal, AF. He flew 193 missions in Vietnam. His airplane was the F-4 Phantom.
Survivors include his loving and caring wife, Jane Luther Smith of Sumter, SC, one daughter, Cynthia Viers Mata of Pembroke Pines, Florida, and one son, Jason Allan Viers of New York City, NY, two grandsons, Zachary E. Mata of Greenville, SC and Joshua A. Mata of Orlando, FL; one sister, Candace Hartzler of Worthington, OH; three brothers, Thomas L. Viers, Sr. of Sumter, SC, Philip D. Viers and his wife Christie of Ohio, and retired marine Lt. Colonel, Michael W. Viers and his wife Sue of Snead’s Ferry, NC; the Daily Family and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David R. Viers.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 11:00 am in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with full military honors.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services, on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 am at Bullock Funeral Home.
