Paul Gober Obituary

Sumter, SC …. Paul Dominic Gober, age 88, beloved husband of 65 years to Monica K. Gober, died on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at his residence.

He was born on July 23, 1934, in Buck Run, Pennsylvania. Paul was one of nine children of the late Michael and Kathryn Hopko Gober.

In 1952, he graduated from Cass Township High School in Primrose, Pennsylvania. He then went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy and his Master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. In high school, Paul was a three-year starter on the Varsity football, baseball, and basketball teams. At the Naval Academy, he was the starting running back for the 1955 Navy Sugar Bowl championship team that defeated Ole Miss. In 1986, he was inducted into the Allen-Rogowicz chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Following his graduation from the United States Naval Academy, he was commissioned in the Air Force and served for 26 years, retiring in 1982 as a Lieutenant Colonel. While stationed in Germany, he served as a player-coach for the 1961-1964 Wiesbaden Flyers who won the 1962 European Football Championship. After his retirement from the United States Air Force, he taught math at St. Jude’s High school and Central Carolina Technical College. Paul was an avid handball and racquetball player who won numerous tournaments over the years.
 

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Cheryl Eron of Sumter, SC,  Mary Winstead (Rick) of Anderson, SC,  Jane Franklin (Bill) of Wetumpka, AL, Joseph Gober of Sumter, SC, Catherine Taylor (Keith) of Wetumpka, AL, Michelle Harrington (Thomas) of Parkland, FL and John Gober (Donna) of Leland, NC; one brother, James Gober of Depford, NJ; one sister Rose Turnowchyk of Lancaster, PA;
eight grandchildren: Nichole Cribb, Madison Crossland, Olivia Winstead, Truman Franklin, Taron Reaves, Megan Taylor, Gregory Taylor, Connor Harrington and one great grandchild, Hannah Britton.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at Bullock Funeral Home from 5:00 7:00 pm

A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2022, at 11:00 am at St. Jude Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at 2:00pm in the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
