Sumter, SC…Russell Erick Braaten, age 67, beloved husband of 40 years to Mary Beth Vaughan Braaten, died on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.
Born in Redding, CA, he was the son of the late Arnold Torkel Braaten and Mary Rosell Lamar Braaten. A strong man of faith, Russell was a faithful member of the Destiny Praise Center in Sumter. He loved the Lord, and he served his church as a Deacon. Known to many as the “gentle giant”, Russell was a very kind and humble man. He was a member of the United States Air Force for 17 years. He served in Operation Desert Storm and achieved the rank of TSGT. He loved his San Fransisco 49ers and enjoyed grilling outside. However, his true joy in life came from spending time with his family and those that he loved, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Beth; two daughters, Courtney Scarber, and Amy Stewart and her husband Elijah Stewart, Jr. all of Sumter, SC; two sisters, Judith Adolph and her husband John, and Barbara Thomas, both of CA; eight grandchildren, Tangenia, Drayton, Micah, Makayla, Wesley, Savannah, Samuel, and Finley; one great granddaughter, Sariyah; two nephews, Brian Crowe, and Eryk Thomas and his wife Crystal, and one great nephew Stokely Thomas.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Lincoln Thomas.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 12:00 pm at the Destiny Praise Center, with Pastors James and Tracy Stewart officiating. The service will conclude with military honors. Inurnment will follow the service in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 11:00-12:00 pm at the Destiny Praise Center.
