Sumter, SC .......... Shirley Jean Johnson Miller, age 93, beloved wife of Jack M. Miller, passed away on Wednesday, October 15th, 2025, at Covenant Place.
Born and raised in Woodhull, IL, Shirley was the daughter of the late Edwin Walter Johnson and Selma Wilhelmina Rosene Johnson. She graduated from Alwood High School in 1949 and was employed at John Deere in Moline, IL, for five years. On September 18, 1951, Shirley married Jack Miller, a love that has lasted over 74 years. Jack and Shirley lived the majority of their lives in Rock Island, IL, where they were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. They were also members at Bethany Lutheran Church in Woodhull, IL.
For the past 12 years they have lived in Sumter, SC, to be closer to their children. They attended St. James Lutheran Church in Sumter. Shirley dedicated her life to making a loving home for her family. She enjoyed sewing, puzzling, reading, watching sports, and was a fierce ping pong player. Shirley is remembered as a caring and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Becky Miller-Franz (Peter), Sumter, SC, Brenda Simonds (Tim), Sumter, SC, and Lisa Bohl (Steve), Tallahassee, FL; a brother, Dorance Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Marty Johnson and Mary Willett; four grandchildren, Philip Franz (Karrie Marks) and Eric Franz, Sumter, SC, Lauren Simonds, Charleston, SC, and Trevor Simonds (Justine), Coal City, IL; one great-grandchild, Cyrus Simonds, Coal City, IL.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Clayton Johnson, Richard Johnson, David Johnson; two sisters, Lucille Sherer and Joyce Livengood: and her beloved cat, Lucy.
No services will be held at this time.
