Shirley Way Ross

Sumter, SC…Shirley Way Ross, age 88, beloved wife of 68 years to the late

James William Ross, Sr., died on Monday, September 11, 2023, at National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born in Dorchester County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Louis Way and Venie Knight Way.  During her husband’s long military career, Shirley proudly supported her family as a devoted homemaker and provided a loving home to her husband and children.  At the age of 41, she began what would be a long and successful career as a realtor with Hawkins and Kolb Realty of Sumter.  Shirley would eventually go out on her own where she successfully owned and operated the first REMAX agency in Sumter.  She would later become the owner/broker in charge of the Agent Owned Realty Co. in Sumter until her retirement.  During her long career she would mentor countless young real estate agents and their success was her greatest joy.  In addition to being named a the Realtor of the Year in 2010, Shirley was inducted in the 2021 Sumter Board of Realtors Hall of Fame.  She will be remembered as a very loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mentor, and friend to all who knew her.

She is survived by three sons, James William Ross. Jr. and his wife Mary Anne, Michael Lewis Ross, and Jeffery Allen Ross and his wife Lori, all of Dalzell; one daughter, Sherrie Ross Mayes and her husband Jimmy of Murrells Inlet, SC; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a son, John David Ross as well as her two brothers.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at 11:00 am in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clay Smith and Rev. Tim Brown officiating.  The interment will follow the service in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, on Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 10:00-11:00 am at Bullock Funeral Home.
