Stephen Edward Collins

Sumter, SC … Stephen Edward Collins, age 81, died on Friday, July 8, 2022, at his residence.

Born in Beckley, West Virginia, he was the son of the late John Maynard Collins and Inna Margaret Maddy Collins.  After high school, Steve attended and graduated from Virginia Tech University and received his master's degree from Wayne State University.  He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force and retired after over 20 years as a Major.  Steve was the owner/operator of Collins Tree Service in Sumter for many years.  He was an avid boater, collector, and woodworker.  He loved music and played both the accordion and trumpet.  Steve was a longtime member of Shaw Heights Baptist Church where he served for many years as a deacon.  Steve was very active in the Sumter community for many years and will leave behind many friends to cherish his memory.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Maynard Collins.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at 11:00 at Shaw Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob White officiating.  Full military honors will take place at the conclusion of the ceremony.

A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, on Saturday, July 16, 2022, from 10:00-11:00 am at Shaw Heights Baptist Church.

The interment will take place on Monday, July 18, 2022, at 1:00 pm in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 1915 Harper Road, Beckley WV 25801.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Shaw Heights Baptist Church, 2030 Peach Orchard Road, Sumter, SC 29154.
